Don’t you just love seasonal produce? It is something marvellous about eating that which has just been freshly harvested and turning it into a meal. It makes you feel in tune with nature as well as the distant past, when eating seasonally was all that one could do.
The longer I stick to a predominantly plant-based diet, the more I crave it. Funny isn’t it? Contrary to what one may think, making your meal consist of mainly veg is actually not the purist, boring and lonely avenue some may proclaim it to be, rather it is an incredibly delicious, energising and unifying endeavour which keeps on giving. Where I grew up in Sweden you went to the school which was closest to your house. Everyone knew how it worked and therefore there were no surprises when you came of age to move on to the Swedish equivalent of secondary school. Those who lived in my area went to the same school – job done! Here in England, on the other hand, things are not so straight forward. My children are preparing for a change of schools next year and the closer the date looms, the higher my stress levels soar. There are so many options, so many roads which they can travel, all with different benefits and concerns and it feels quite impossible to know what to choose. If you’re like me, this time of year you’ll crave anything which does not remind you of festive foods. It is like your body is automatically programmed to detox. And this extends to drinking too. Green juice, herbal teas, plenty of filtered water and minimal alcohol is on my menu for the foreseeable future and it feels fantastic. Saying that, it is not always easy to find a wide enough variety of flavours when cooking green and healthy – at times it can get a bit repetitive.
