‘ Store cupboard essentials’ porridge

Ahhhh… so nice to be back home in London again. My off-piste eating excursions have been rather exceptional so I can’t wait to kick-start my good food habits anew.  Being on holiday is great but you never have your ‘stuff’ at the ready. All those extra curricular condiments and such like that you’ve collected over weeks and months and that you take for granted when you assemble/cook food at home. On holiday you have the choice to buy the whole lot again – or not in my case. I did it the local way instead and ate what was there and enjoyed it. Basta. Blueberry Super Smoothie

When I prepare breakfast smoothies for my children I’ve learned that the trick for immediate consumption is the use of colour – and green is not the colour of choice! Instead, using red or black berries of any variety gives the smoothie that required pink/purple wow factor needed for a thumbs up. Following easter’s sweet fest I felt they needed a much-needed boost of nutrition that did not come out of an easter egg. They just got over a pesky cold so I also wanted to make sure they got a big dose of vitamin C, coupled with some vegetable protein and important omega-3 fatty acids. Smoothies are good that way – you can put all kinds of goodies inside and no one will know!

Top tip! Until the season is here when berries start to grow locally again, buying frozen fruit (organic if possible) is a great way of always being five minutes away from a great smoothie.

Here is what went into this morning’s smoothie! Continue reading “Blueberry Super Smoothie”

However, what I’ve found is that most do taste different, as in not as sweet or chocolatey as regular brownies. And as my main audience for these brownies are my kids, that is a problem. Energy Bites

Chocholate ball

Presented with a choice of sweet or savory, I’d go for savory every time. This penchant is probably reflected on the Green Swede blog where juice, salads and main courses dominate.  However, friends have asked me to feature more desserts as there are so many great new recipes for cakes and puddings that replace the traditional flour, sugar, egg combo with healthier alternatives that are actually good for you.
